while the #coronavirus might not discriminate, unfortunately the same cannot be said for our society.
as the virus tears through all states and all peoples, our reporting shows the poorest among us face the most risk. 1/ https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/03/us/coronavirus-stay-home-rich-poor.html">https://www.nytimes.com/interacti...

analyzing location information from millions of cellphones we saw that by the middle of March people had begun significantly reducing their movements, and certainly as of March 16 when the president first encouraged people to stay home. 2/
but when looking at the differences between the wealthiest areas and the poorest, differences quickly became evident. across the most popular metro areas the richest have consistently reduced their movement more than the poorest. 3/
in short, the richest can *afford* to & #39;shelter in place.& #39; but for the poorest, many of whom have jobs deemed & #39;essential& #39; (grocery store clerk, health care, garbage collection), staying home is a *luxury* that can be beyond their means. 4/ https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/03/us/coronavirus-stay-home-rich-poor.html">https://www.nytimes.com/interacti...
what also jumped out is the head start that the wealthiest received. by the time the president asked people to stay home to slow the spread, the richest had already halved their movement. it would take 3 more days for the poorest to do the same. 5/
we know that those days are critical when it comes to protecting one& #39;s self, one& #39;s family, one& #39;s community. and we& #39;re not talking a day or two... in many places it was 4 or 5 days... up to more than a week in several locations. 6/
we add details about some of the metro areas and include the voices of people on both side of the economic divide in the article, so please read it and think of those who are literally risking their lives for all of us. w @jenvalentino and @DeniseDSLu /end https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/03/us/coronavirus-stay-home-rich-poor.html">https://www.nytimes.com/interacti...
