ngl, he's my favorite artist and everything he does is amazing, but the show based on Simon Stalenhag's "Tales From the Loop" was a bit of a letdown for me. In my opinion, it loses the magic of the book by putting all of its weight on its flat, underdeveloped characters (1/)
instead of the setting that made the books so amazing. All of the things that contributed to the greatness of the books are lost. There is no swedishness. there is no 80's feel. and most importantly, there is none of the technology like what? in the first four episodes alone (2/)
I only saw one of the robots that were so plentiful in the books. the drab setting in the show, Mercer, Ohio, seems as if it could be any other town. the rare glimpse of the cooling towers is the highlight of each episode. (3/)
overall, I just feel the show is good in its own right, but staggeringly disappointing compared to the source material. None of the ambitious concepts from the book are even near approached, I've yet to see a giant robot, a magnetron ship, anything other than a predictable (4/)
episodic story that uses a macguffin not even from the book to advance an entirely character-driven narrative that has the atmosphere of the books nowhere in sight. Stranger Things was so great because it balanced its rich world with its likable characters, but this show (5/)
puts all of the weight on its characters alone. I was really hoping for a more accurate adaption of Stalenhags world, the one that has inspired me for years on end. I truly hope that any future adoptions can attempt the same majesty and atmosphere as his masterpiece art books.
