This TBS/JNN poll is the first poll in ten days or so - we should be getting NHK soon - and contains a lot of bad news for Abe. https://news.tbs.co.jp/newsi_sp/yoron/backnumber/20200404/q1-1.html 1/
It's not only that cabinet disapproval ticked up above 50% -- and 73% said that the Moritomo Gakuen case should be re-examined. The public mood has soured on Abe's handling of #Covid_19. 2/
55% disapprove of Abe's handling of the outbreak; 31% approve. That's a net swing of 11pts from the previous poll, which wasn't great either (50% disapprove, 37% approve). 3/
80% support a state of emergency declaration, but given that Abe dragged his feet, high support for a declaration does not necessarily work in his favor. 4/
Meanwhile, 70% support keeping schools closed, a step which will likely happen - at least in the seven jurisdictions subject to the declaration - but not because the Abe government pushed it. 5/
And Abe's "two masks" proposal ( #安倍のマスク) was about as popular as the jibes suggest: only 22% approve, 75% disapprove. 6/
The poll also asks what stimulus policies respondents are hoping for, but the phrasing makes it difficult to determine. (Although 33% support a consumption tax reduction, which will not be in the package.) We'll have to see subsequent polls for views of the stimulus package. 7/
The upshot is that between the headline numbers and the lack of support for what the Abe government has been doing, it is very clear that Abe himself is vulnerable as the number of cases climbs. 8/8
