I didn’t know how to retire from being a basketball player.

There’s no blueprint for how to walk away from sports.

I started by asking myself questions, but later learned I was asking the wrong things.

Here’s 5 questions you have to ask yourself before you retire from sports:
1. Did I try to experience everything I could from the game?

Regret is powerful. The last thing you want to say is, “Damn I wish I would had...” Don’t retire from your sport with regrets. Get everything you can out of it.
2. What are the biggest takeaways I got out of my sport?

I’m sure you’ve played your sport for most of your life. Think about what you took away, what lessons you learned and how those things are going to help you going forward. Leverage that experience and the skills you built
3. What exactly am I walking towards?

Walking away from something is much easier when you move towards something else. Even Kobe had a plan B. Retiring with a plan makes the transition much easier.
4. Who can I ask for help & guidance?

Mentors matter. Every successful person you know has had a mentor, coach, or someone in their corner who provided help when they needed it. If you want a successful transition, you should be no different.
5. Do I truly know who I am?

Self-awareness is key in life. Ask yourself:

“What kind of life do I want to live?”
“What does a good day look like?”
“What honestly makes me happy?”
“How do I want to be remembered?”

Be clear on these things. You really gotta know yourself.
