We have confidence in the way HMPPS in leading us through COVID. Government are brave in the ER initiative. But 2000, 3000 or 4000 is no where near enough. Overcrowding must be removed if HMPPS leadership are to given a fighting chance. Overcrowding will put the NHS at risk

Overcrowding will put our colleagues at risk and those in our care. What will make a difference? Our top ten overcrowded prisons range between 174% overcrowded to 151% overcrowded. One of these prisons CNA is 694 with an operational capacity of1087, if full nearly 800

men would be in overcrowded conditions.
Stability, regimes and adequate staffing all are considered when setting operational capacity, we risk stability, we have little regime and we are loosing staffing.
We ask government to be braver and make significant reductions

to operational capacities. The public and media must understand that by not doing this pressure will be put on the NHS, and more people will die in prisons.
