Now that it's a few days past April 1st, it strikes me that most living humans are probably Very Confused by the Ikkadikku/SQDDK/Squiddick stuff I post every year. I'mma peel back the curtain just this one time, if only to explain the weird amount of work we put into this thing.
2020, a pretty tepid year for April Fools nonsense (understandably), is actually the 5th anniversary of our joke band Squiddick. It's made up of me, my wife EM Shupe, and my friends @ianmc042 and Andrew Howard.
After I used FB for two years to prank my mom (I said I had become a Scientologist, which freaked her the fuck out, and the next year I explained I was a Juggalo, which she didn't understand but was encouraging about, to amazing comedic effect) I wanted to do something different.
Ian and I wanted to make some dumb music without any anxiety about it being perceived as "real", and the name "Squiddick" along with the logo popped in my head while we ate outside a Chik-Fil-A in the middle of Atlanta.
We went to our basement and recorded a really loud and ridiculous 20 minutes of music, all improvised, about sea life. EM played an old organ Ian found at a thrift store, Andrew played guitar and took up the herculean task of mastering our very bad audio.
Then we said we were quitting our jobs to go on tour, photoshopped ourselves getting tattoos of the Squiddick logo, and posted everything to the innernette. Thus started a silly, inscrutable tradition with the four of us that has been a highlight of my years since.
We played live in our basement the next year with makeshift costumes. EM and I moved to Vancouver the next year, so we started making music remotely. The music stayed VERY silly, but we started putting more and more work into it. We worked for a full 3 months on this one.
It's been an incredibly fun way to make music with friends no matter where we are in the world. If you read all of this, you are Very Cool and should give our dumb dumb music another listen: https://ikadikku.bandcamp.com/album/ikasumi-pasta-party
Finally, you may have noticed I never talked about our producer, Benny "Lower Lip" Kauffman. He is real, he is an inspiration, and he'll never get on twitter because he can't see screens though his prescription sunglasses, which he never removes.
