“how to make (better) moodboards” a thread
Let’s start with apps. Personally, I use PS Express for the form and creating the moodboard and Retrica or Snapseed for the coloring. Of course, there are various other apps that can work just as well, so find the right one for yourself!
I think the most important thing about making moodboards are pictures. 99% of the photos I use for my moodboards were found on Pinterest, sometimes on Tumblr. Pinterest enables you to start a detailed search by putting “windows aesthetic” or “fantasy aesthetic” in the search bar
Generally, I usually just type the object or setting I’m searching for and add “aesthetic” to it. Most of the times you’ll be able to find something that matches your concept.
It’s the best if you don’t pick random pics, but decide on a color concept first. It can be blue or two colors intertwined with each other. Here composition will play a big of an role, but I’ll come back to it in the next step.
now let’s move on to PS Express. When you open the app, you have two options. You can either edit singular pictures or create a collage of the existing ones. What I’ll focus here is the collage option, cause that’s how we create our moodboard.
Personally, I like 3x3 moodboards, so 9 pictures in general, but the app allows you to create a moodboard with whichever number of photos. It’s up to you!
One the first picture it’s showed how u can pick various formats. The app provides you with a variety of options, so I’m sure you’ll find something you like.
The second picture showcases how you can custom the arrangement in which the pictures are displayed.

You can also adjust the frame. Personally I don’t like to have it in my moodboard, but if you wish to, you can vary the color and thickness.
Now to composition. It should base on the color arrangement you decided on. If the pictures you found are simply blue, it’s not that complex, but if you wish to mix green and yellow photos or dark and bright it is important for the composition to be well thought through.
To help you understand what I mean I will use my old moodboards.
In this moodboard, there’s a simple composition maintained by two approaches. The first one is the dark/lighter arrangement and the parallel one that is created by the pictures of Yoongi and Hoseok.

Another helpful tool PS Express gives us is the opportunity to even out the colors, so that the moodboard looks more matching. I don’t always use it, cause it doesn’t always work that well, but it doesn’t hurt to try it out before saving your moodboard :)
Now, once we have our raw moodboard, let’s move on to the coloring. For me, Retrica is the best filter app. Sure, there are not many options to adjust the settings, but the provided filters are good enough to manipulate the colors, even if they don’t look so good together at first
Of course, there’s plenty of other apps that you can use, but this thread focuses on which one I think is best. Feel free to experiment and share your experiences! :)
I think that’s all
I haven’t said much about Snapseed, but what I use it for is usually more complex coloring or editing pictures that don’t fit the rest that well. Here’s how the app looks like:

I hope I was able to help you and that you know now how to approach making a moodboard. If you think this thread is useful, please retweet so more people can see it.
feel free to share your thoughts and ways, maybe I’ll learn something for u! :)
