Tbh I hate partaking in this kind of debate but I guess some things need to be said. It's fine if you want to stay out of this but if you happen to be in contact with people involved in this reposting situation, please hear me out and spread the word to them.

I’ll try to treat points one by one based on what I’ve read here on twitter so far. I’m certain some of you really don’t have any malicious intentions but it doesn’t change the fact reposting is still harmful for artists. I hope you can bear with me until then.
1) “But I credited the artist and linked to their account!”
It’s more than just giving credit. Reposting ≠sharing work. It is a fact that most people seeing reposts will *not* check out the source, on top of the fact your page will become “a source” on search engines.

If you were actually given permission then I won’t say anything, though we all know for a fact a lot of these reposts did not get it. But I’ll be frank, out of respect for an artist, EVEN if they gave you permission, it is really more cordial not to do it at all. See why below.
I’m repeating myself, but this thread here gives all the answers on why reposting is a harmful practice, even if credits are given. If you legitimately thinking you’re doing any good to the artists whose works you’re reposting, please, read this. https://twitter.com/graphicfighter/status/1080964222064971777?s=20
2) “But it’s not my fault if my audience doesn’t look at the credits”
It isn’t, but you initiated a vicious cycle by reposting in the first place. You can break this cycle by just sharing the link instead of saving and reposting the picture.

3) "We don’t perceive it the same way! I’m only promoting your work! My friends love it!"
I think a major issue in this situation is how unaware you guys are of the damages reposting has on an artist’s self-esteem and career, regardless of your intents.
Refer to point No.1 +link

Even if your intents aren’t vile, be aware that what you’re doing has negative consequences.
You can just link to their post without saving nor reposting the picture. Learning from mistakes and respecting to the artist’s will is how you will prevent future conflicts of this kind.

4) “But the artist didn’t say not to repost their work!! So I have the right to do that!”
Maybe so. But you know, aside from rules and copyright laws, there’s also this thing called good manners.
Presumed permission because someone never expressed prohibition is Not a permission.

Some artists don’t always feel the need to express prohibition because they don’t expect people to repost their work. Does that mean they like or approve of it? I don’t think so, if the recent reaction is of any indication.
It's not about rules here, rather than simple courtesy.

As an artist, having your work reposted without permission feels like you’ve just been spat on the face. I mean it.
Show respect, be courteous. Are you gonna just barge into someone’s house and touch their belongings because they didn’t scream out loud it was their property?

I’d like to point out this is also my case. Just because an artist doesn’t have “don’t repost my work” pasted on their profile doesn’t mean they’re allowing it. You’re just testing their patience by acting like this. Respecting this silence is nothing less than manners.
Don’t be surprised if some of them are getting angry at you. And if you’re really ready to armwrestle the artist about rights to do that / who does or doesn’t have the right over THEIR creation I’ll be direct with you: You’re being an ass and you are Not showing any sort respect.
No one cares if you’re legally allowed to do this or that. If you don’t know what the artist thinks, then just don’t do it. It’s as simple as that. Don’t flex on whatever laws to do what you want and disregard the artists’ will. This is just being purposely provocative.
5) But I’m not the one responsible for reposts without permission!
Then *please* spread the word. If the artist gave you direct permission that is fine. I believe you should also specify when permission has indeed been granted, ideally along with a proof of that statement.

Since you all are hanging on this website, encourage your peers to ask for permission, and at best to not repost at all honestly. Don’t say you apologize on everyone’s behalf if you know some of you are going to repeat these mistakes anyway.
All you’re doing by trying to justify your acts is deteriorating your reputation among this fandom, and from what I’ve seen this is not the first time this is happening. Acknowledge a lot of artists have been wronged. This is why They expect an apology.
I know there've been some violent words spreaded over the last hours and I do believe some of them were unjust. I don’t want to pick up a fight with anyone and I’m sure some of you don’t have anything to do with this, so I’ll do my best not holding any stigma bc of nationalities.
But do understand why people are angry, and why you’re losing the trust of the fandom by acting this way, especially knowing this has happened before. It’s not just about crediting. Always ask for permission. If it’s they say no, don’t do it. If there’s no answer, don’t do it.
Thank you for reaching this part if you’ve read the entirety of this thread, especially so if you’re part of the people this is addressed to. I really think no one is enjoying this situation. So show understanding towards the artists, and this surge of anger won’t happen again.
