So you passionate about photography but you don’t know how to go about it?
Here’s some advice that might help you remember I’m also a student of the universe so someone might have a different opinion but anyway...
Camera purchase, the first camera you might need to get does not have to be high end, I mean you can get a decent beginners camera that costs roughly around R4000-R8000 brand new but if your budget does not allow second hand is also an option
At this point you don’t need to worry about lenses remember you still new to this industry, most cameras come with kit lenses/basic lenses that you can use mean time...
Remember buying a camera doesn’t mean anything with that being said you still need to practice, practice and practice.
You can start doing shoots with people living around your area, random people you meet, people at events, trees, clouds, animals, buildings or whatever remember you might not have a theme yet so the more pictures you take the better
Taking practice shoots will also guide you on the theme you want to branch to.
Another tool you can use is YouTube trust me there are thousands of videos that can guide you as a new aspiring photographer.
Some topics you might want to learn about
Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO, Exposure Moses/Metering, Raw vs Jpeg, Composition Technique Auto vs Manual focusing, flash photography, list is endless
Now the next step is to network, there are a lot of ways to network, let’s say you go to any event and you meet another photographer don’t be afraid to go to him/her and ask few things you might want to know or even better take their contacts
So remember at this point you don’t really have gigs/clients what you can do is offer free services to showcase your skills, for example you might have a friend that is doing a party, go there shoot as if it’s a paying gig...
Shoot at family gatherings, shoot friends that love pictures, a person might even approach you cause you carrying a camera and might invite you to come and shoot at their parents anniversary birthday or anything, shoot free if possible.
I understand one of the reasons you in this industry is to make money but if you start charging right away you might even lose a client because some clients want to see your previous work that you have done hence from those free shoots, you would have content.
Now having all this work, what you can do is open a social media page, it can even be just one page for now, the most common one is instagram. Let people know about your page, even the random people you meet/network with.
One thing I forgot to mention, while you learning more about photography you can also check other photographers work on social media, at the end of this thread I will give you recommendations of the photographers work you can check...
Now that more people know about your work you will be getting gigs/clients you can start working on pricing, obviously rates won’t be the same as a pro photographer or any other beginner, there are lot of factors that come into play when charging...
Locations, hours of shooting, what you shooting etc, but the trick is that always avoid under charging as clients will question your cheap rates, they might even choose a photographer who is slightly expensive than you cause you price is to good to be true
