It's great the federal government has put federal student loan interest on hold until Sept. Let's see how many ways @Navient can make the implementation 100x more complicated to navigate for everyday borrowers...
This morning, I received the attached letter by email notifying me my loans have been automatically enrolled in "administrative forbearance". At least they told me...
However, given past trouble with Navient trying to screw me and (many) others over, I was immediately suspicious and re-read carefully to notice that they have also turned off my auto-payments. They have assumed that because interest = 0% I wouldn't want to pay
While that is a great assumption for the 10% of the population that has very sadly lost there job amid the COVID crisis. This means that those who still have a job are automatically removed from the default (monthly payments that go toward their principle)
I am very lucky to still have my job and would happily leave auto-payment on and put the $120 I pay in interest a month toward my principle. Over the next 6 months, that $720 that would normally go to interest that is instead going to principle.
But wait! Navient says I can contact them to opt-out and turn auto-payments back on. Should be as simple as pushing a button on their website, so I log-in....
As I knew deep down, there is nothing on my home page or any other page (unless I'm really missing something obvious) that says how I am supposed to turn this off. In fact, there is barely an indication of what happened to my account other than, my loans are no longer due...
So I called @navient to try to do this over the phone and of course their phone lines are full and am still waiting for a call back an hour later. I will keep this thread updated as I once again due battle with their bureaucracy
Maybe @ewarren (cc: @TessByars ) or @iamjohnoliver who know Navient's tricks well will be able to shame them into fixing this and my many other Navient gripes (I still have not been able to replicate how they calculate interest in an excel spreadsheet....)
