This is the cruiser USS Raleigh, credited with firing the first shots in the Battle of Manila Bay, Philippines, during the Spanish-American War. In April 1899, 120 sailors from the Raleigh were toasted at a banquet held for them in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

The US Senate conducted an inquiry into the sinking of the Titanic. The commission's meetings, shown in this photo, took place at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in April 1912. John Jacob Astor IV was one of the people who was lost.

As mentioned in this thread, there was an elaborate dinner for the USS Raleigh crew at the Waldorf-Astoria in 1899, after their return from victory in the Philippines. The Raleigh returned to Pacific waters; and from the looks of this officers' dinner menu, they had a nice time.
