A boring thread about bullshit in Sustainability Reports.
πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Starting alphabetically. @agnicoeagle mines $AEM

Word "transparency" appears 12 times; "trust" 8 times. In calculating "Total direct and indirect GHG emissions" they exclude Scope 3. You wouldn't know because they're not defined.
@AimiaInc (Aeroplan)

2016 report is newest I could find. Shows CDP score rising and says "committed to continuous improvement" but score dropped in 2017 & 2018. Might explain why I only found PDF on a 3rd party site. https://database.globalreporting.org/reports/54338/

πŸ”transparent (3)
πŸ”trust (13)
@AirCanada 🀒

CEO hyping pointlessly narrow awards.

"sustainability performance in a transparent and accountable manner" (S1&S2 [not S3] in separate doc).

Self congrats via "Liters for every 100 Revenue Tonne [km]" due to new planes.

Missing 9 relevant S3 categories (CDP).
@AQN_Utilities $AQN

Big disappointment. Went from 10% fossil fuel to 57% in 2017. Huge jump in CO2e. All future emissions targets are now set from 2017 which is super-bullshit.

No Scope 3 CO2e data anywhere.

CEO @AQN_IanCEO in front of stock photoπŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/turbine-green-energy-electricity-technology-concept-321696341
Alimentation Couche-Tard (gas stations and convenience stores) $ATD.B

Report accounts for only United States, Canada and Europe (~80% of total).

Hopelessly narrow Scope 1 & 2 "[S1] include natural gas only. [S2] include electricity."

No response to CDP. No S3 anywhere.
@AltaGas $ALA

"Environment" page has a pipeline on it so at least there is no attempt to #greenwash.πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Congratulates itself for using BC's mostly-clean electrical grid. (Mix data πŸ‘‡ not in report)

Final page has incomplete Scope data.
Here is a diagram I made using National Energy Board's energy generation data. (Stacked line graphs are roughly scaled to province usage)

I made a meme about corporate Sustainability Report #greenwashing
@BMO is just endless PDFs.

I can't even type them all out. I had to make a diagram.

What is clear:
-BMO spends a shit-ton on lobbying.
-BMO only accounts for 2 out of 15 'Scope 3' categories (business travel & waste generated in operations)
BMO BS Highlights:

-Convoluted scatter-plot
-"Sustainability-related" awards page filled with obscure, unrelated awards
-Repeated insistence on 100% carbon neutral (by limiting the scope of accounting)
-Oil & Gas (14.9B [via 3.3%])
-Renewable Energy and Projects (4.2B) p.16
One award search brought me to this super prestigious, totally legit awards page.
To be fair, this one-page PDF from BMO is relatively good.
Word "transparency" appears 11 times in @scotiabank's 2018 Sustainability Report and 10 times in the 2019 report.

Both have worthless Scope 3 reporting. They account for only 1/15 categories.

Do better: @mgallant2, @bseale, @sandra_odendahl
@BarrickGold "Serious about Sustainability"

Spoiler: they aren't.

Under title: "TRANSPARENT REPORTING" they talk about a CDP report that isn't available to download on their site or CDP's either. So transparent its invisible!

("transparent" appears 34 times in 100 pages)πŸ₯΄
To find BS in #BauschHealth look no further than this stupid graph.

Fluff: "We are transparent, honest, ethical and fair in all our interactions"

CDP report available to download? Nah.
Lets Talk about @Bell BS.

They actually publish the @ghgprotocol image but only report business travel.

They link to @sciencetargets but aren't on the list.

CDP report not available on their site. Instead they have a 4 page "Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report" PDF.

πŸŒΆοΈπŸ—‘οΈ
A welcome change towards clarity is @BlackBerry

Their website has emission data going back to 2008. Click "Environment" and this graph is what you see. πŸ‘

Improvement would be
-More Scope 3
-Downloadable csv
-PDFs of previous CDP submissions (broken links)
-Updated
Some respect for Brookfield Asset Managers for actually putting "Scope 3 Business Air Travel" as the line item, not hiding it in the fine print. Nice to see intensity as mtCO2e/FTEs. Good unit.

Wish they reported more years and had more than one category for S3.
Attempts made for BRP (aka Bombardier Recreational Products) (Jetskis etc) using some 3rd party platform.

Graph goes back to 2011 and you can export the data.

Scope 3 is incomplete (1/15).

Very odd "CO2e / unit produced" considering the range & prices of products.

No PDF?
No BS by @CAE_Inc (Aircraft sim and training)... just narrow Carbon reporting. Only Scope 1 & 2.
Uranium Miner @cameconews has a fairly straightforward Scope 1 & 2 reporting. Site and PDF are pretty much the same.

As usual, nothing can be found for Scope 3. CDP reports cannot be found on their site.

Reports that *are* available but are old and incomplete.
@cibc has the easiest to find spreadsheet.

E, S & G in separate tabs. Data going back 3 years.

Targets are lousy, emission reductions are comically weak "reduced our energy consumption by 1.18% through lighting upgrades". Are we in 2008?

Rare: working πŸ”— to the CDP report.
Biased: I like trains. @CNRailway
~4x efficient to trucks (chart @alancmckinnon)

CDP report is beautifully and simply formatted. All relevant Scope 3 accounted for. Sad reality is probably only because @BillGates owns 12%.

CDP PDFs available back to 2012.
Does CN bullshit? Kinda.

The "Delivering Responsibly" sustainability report imagery does not reflect that ~25% of revenue is fossil fuel transport.

This pie chart is in the intro so they aren't hiding it. Just downplaying.πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
Need I say anything about @CanadianNatural?

39% Crude from oil sands
24% Natural gas
13% Light and medium crude oil and natural gas liquids
10% Bitumen
14% Heavy crude oil

Confusing website, w/ dumb write-ups like "a portfolio that consists of long life low decline assets"
Side note on claim that train is more efficient than trucking. @Tesla is saying the Semi will be more economical driving in a convoy than a train. ( @elonmusk also said Semi would ship in 2019... so take the numbers with a dose of skepticism)

@CanadianPacific

-CDP reports at fingertips πŸ‘
-Sustainability Metrics report cuts through the fluff πŸ‘
-Scope 3 reporting only Business travel: "Not relevant, calculated"πŸ˜•
-Similar transport mix 😐

Basically, a dumber version of
@CNRailway
Biased. I've worked at @CanadianTire
(Their products are built to fail and they underpay staff)

Scope 3 CDP reporting for only 7/15 categories. Skipping maybe the largest category: "use of sold product".

FYI: Products returned to CT are never fixed: just thrown in trash.
I'll never forget someone returned a full gazebo and said it had a hole in it. (Finger-sized hole)

Could have been patched in 40 seconds but instead it was sent straight into the compactor.

Looked something like this. It was gigantic.
We've got a real stinker with Canadian Western Bank ( @CWBcommunity)

No carbon reporting whatsoever.

Hilariously the founded "City of Edmonton's Corporate Climate Leaders program". So specific.

Climate commitments weaker than kindergarten brainstorming session.
Biased against weed stocks. Still surprised @CanopyGrowth has no carbon reporting whatsoever. No CDP responses.

Seemingly easy to account for? Grow it, burn it?
@CapitalPower are BS experts.

Website and report shows mostly windmills. The pie chart showing "thermals" is vague. I had to build one myself just to figure out that there is more coal than wind.

CDP report is better than average but only 7/15 Scope 3 categories reported.
Actually, Scope 3 appears fairly complete. Several categories don't apply.
No PDF from @LabelCcl but site has stock photo fun-times.

(Pretty sure these aren't actually photos of the earth)

Anyways, they *did* complete their CDP report. Measuring North America & Europe only -- which accounts for 74% of revenue...

Shennanigans elsewhere? Who knows.
. @Celestica_Inc

CDP reporting is okay but...
Scope 3 "Use of sold products" is missing which wouldn't normally bother me but I can't figure out *what* this company makes. Their video is just a string of buzz words.

"The Future. Some think of it as a time or place..."πŸ˜–
"... At Celestica, we think of it as a journey. A journey where the goal is not to arrive at a destination -- but to fulfill a promise. That promise? To unlock potential. It's a journey full of big ideas and bold actions that enable the world's best brands..."
"Its a journey that Celestica is leading side by side with our customers. Together, we build trusted relationships and solve complex technology challenges. Together we relentlessly pursue innovation as we deliver a better future. Together, we are showing the world whats possible"
. @cenovus (oil sands & gas)

"world-leading in terms of [...] transparency" -CEO
"We are transparent" -"OUR VALUES" section
"commitment to be transparent" - "OUR REPORTING APPROACH" section

-Scope 3 missing from the report πŸ™„
-Declined to participate in CDP 2019 & 2018 πŸ™„
2018 Report literally banks on a tragic climate scenario.

They spell out two projections by @IEA and say they are "most aligned" with the consumption scenario that has policy failure & failed climate goals.
πŸ”— https://www.iea.org/reports/world-energy-outlook-2018/oil#abstract

Honestly hope this company goes bankrupt.
Centerra Gold

14πŸ”Transparency
8πŸ”Trust

-Scope 1 & 2 reporting ignores development / assets πŸ‘Ž
-No Scope 3 reporting whatsoever πŸ‘Ž

-New to me: BIODIVERSITY species list πŸ‘
. @CGI_Global, a business consulting firm, has out-of-date reporting (2014)πŸ€”

-Scope 1,2&3 looks whacky. "Minus low-carbon"? "Procured paper" as a category?
-CDP Report not available to DL

Totally slapdash. As if thrown together the night before it was due.
Chemtrade Logistics Income Fund

Once reported Scope 1 CO2e in 2015. Otherwise M.I.A.

No Sustainability report. "CO2" doesn't even show up in annual report... no reference to "transparency" or "trust" (besides 'income trust'). No BS I suppose.

No *anything* really. Β―\\_(ツ)_/Β―
. @CNOOC_Limited (China National Offshore Oil Corporation)

"dedicated to our green and low-carbon strategy"-Chairman

What strategy? Reductions? Who knows. CDP so incomplete: "Please select" is the Scope 3 response.

Appropriate cover tho' looks like a child put it together.πŸ₯
⬆️Cover features a kid drawing an oil well. Unsurprisingly its a stock photo.

Kids aren't actually as dumb as adults.
