A year ago tonight I felt both the lowest lows and the highest highs of sports, and briefly existed in a sort of Schroeder’s Cat singularity/alternate universe where the Hoos got ousted in the national semifinals. My story: 1/
With the venerable @RJManhands on the baseline I was hanging by the portal at US Bank stadium for the game to end so I could race back to the press room for postgame capture and editing. The press room was a full third of the way around the stadium from the UVA locker room. 2/
Virginia 60, Auburn 62. Sideline out of bounds. From where I'm standing, I can sort of see the court, but I can definitely see the basket. I was probably 10 feet behind @ADWilliamsUVA. Ty inbounds, Kyle puts the shot up, and it clanks off the side of the rim. 3/
The PA intones: "Final score, Auburn 62, Virginia 60." I die inside a little and start hustling back into the corridors of US Bank to make the long trek to the press area. Some news photogs, stuck in the back, ask me if the game is over. Yes, I glare. "Who won?" AUBURN UGH 4/
I start jogging, and every TV I pass has a bunch of people huddled around it. I glance over and they're showing a replay of Guy's shot. "Uh, did he get fouled?" I ask one of the crowds. "Yeah!" replies someone. Now it's even worse - they fouled him and they didn't call it. 5/
Now I'm really in a dark place mentally as I am cruising through the halls. Finally I get back to my spot in the press room to switch our record over to the press conference and I notice that people are STILL looking intently at the TVs. I walk up to one. Guy is at the line? 6/
My heart starts beating. There's a dude standing there. "Uh, what is happening?" I sort of wheeze at him. He glances over and sort of checks out the V-Sabre on my pullover. "Well, they called a foul. He's shooting three." 7/
