1/ A politically diverse group of organizations, physicians, and voters joined @CoalitionGoodGv in asking @GaSecofState to review the public health safety of the 80,000 pieces of touchscreen equipment about to be deployed for the May 19 election. Thread ⬇️

2/ GA law requires @GaSecofState determine whether a voting system is "safe" for use. But BMD system uses 80,000 more "high-touch" plastic components than using one-use paper ballots & pens.

Touchscreens require scores of thousands of hours of unnecessary risky staff hours.⬇️
3/We have asked @GaSecofState to engage an infectious disease expert and public health expert to review the touchscreen system in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and recommend appropriate actions.

BMDs add unnecessary risk, unnecessary poll worker hours and exposure.⬇️
4/Pen and paper ballots can be issued to voters by poll workers from behind plexiglass shields. BMDs cannot.

It is very hard to get poll workers now. BMDs add scores of thousands of unnecessary hours that add to labor shortage, and increase health risk. ⬇️
5/ To be clear, @CoalitionGoodGv believes that the May 19 election should be postponed for as long as possible. At least a month! But officials are not acting to do that.

Look at difference in curve for even one month delay.⬇️
6/ We @CoalitionGoodGv urge as much mail balloting as is feasible, but recognize that many will need in-person voting. And presently, law requires fully deploying equipment and staffing the precincts.

So voting system should be planned to minimize touching and handling.
