As we prepare to cross 10,000 deaths in the USA today, April 6, I would like to recall John Ioannidis’s optimistic piece from March 17 entitled “A fiasco in the making.” https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/17/a-fiasco-in-the-making-as-the-coronavirus-pandemic-takes-hold-we-are-making-decisions-without-reliable-data/
People will defend Ioannidis by saying “all he was saying is that we needed more data.” And all the Allies needed to defeat U-Boats in the Battle of the Atlantic was an emplaced, computerized sonar array.
You go to war with the data you have. Our data here was limited. Insofar as Ioannidis’s article was a howl at the unfairness of that, it was pointless. Insofar as it was an attempt to propose governments take action based on his optimistic scenarios, it was deeply immoral.
