Dalberg & Agami are hosting a series of webinars that bring together leading voices working in & around the justice system in #India to consider both the short-term impact of #Covid_19 & the long-term implications for the justice system. Join us for the first one on @zoom_us tom!
Quick update: The first 'Justice in a Pandemic' call this evening can hold a maximum of a 100 participants. We are working to increase this number for tomorrows call. More details on that event soon! Stay tuned!
Watch this space for the 'Justice in a Pandemic' conversation. Stay tuned as we explore measures that can be deployed to address the risks & opportunities that this moment presents @harsh_mander @vrindagrover @MamidiPavanH @sharmasupriya @scroll_in @CHRI_INT @majadhun @HAQCRC
Justice Lokur kicks things off by outlining the risks a moment like this brings. Some of these are 1) reduced access 2)increased corruption 3)PIL greatly suffering
. @vrindagrover following him highlighting that it’s not #Covid_19 that created barriers of in-person litigation. But rather COVID-19 has just aggravated an already existing situation. There is a need to put the citizens freedoms and rights at the center.
In a country of privilege & power, we're extremely comfortable with inequality says @harsh_mander. There is a need for imagination within the system when we are dealing with rights & basic entitlements.
"These are problems being carried over from the past, antiquity of our criminal justice system is only getting accentuated but its consequences are only going to get more harsh." @harsh_mander #Covid_19 #covidindia #Covid_19india
Bharti Ali from @HAQCRC says we are in a situation where we are asking whether right to food or right to dignity is more important, and how to balance. At times like these courts have to make sure the orders they are issuing are being implemented.
"Right now, litigants have no information on how to approach their cases... no helplines are running. Huge anxieties & also fears. We know domestic violence is on the rise. What are we doing? Are they getting protection orders? A helpline here would help." Bharti form @HAQCRC
"In terms of new risks...there is no pretense to keeping to the rule of law & you have created a compliant audience. Very few in the liberal camp who have knowledge & the voice to speak out. For the poor there are dole outs - financial & that of justice." @majadhun @CHRI_INT
Taking the courts online might help reduce biases that are involved when you see people in person says @MamidiPavanH @CSBC_AU
In these times, the new risk is there is no pretense to stick to rule of law & a creation of a compliant citizenry. The middle class has too much to do & risk to lose what they have. It is only the liberal privileged that speak up @majadhun @CHRI_INT
