I’d like to speak to the issue of churches gathering for worship.
First, let’s acknowledge that it is a hard thing not to gather for worship. This may be difficult for those who aren’t churched to understand. As a believer, regularly attending worship services is a fundamental
part of life. It’s like breathing, eating, sleeping. And here it is Easter season. So I get the impulse to want to gather together.
Second, while I understand the difficulty, the churches must look deeper. Look beyond what feels comfortable and even necessary. Look as always
To the example of Christ on the cross. He laid down his life for others. We can lay down physically meeting together for awhile for the sake of the health and safety of our members, guests, families, friends, neighbors, and strangers. That is what we must do.
Third, as the
old hymn says “Count your blessings, name them one by one”. We are blessed to have technology. Our church, like many others, met by Facebook Live on Sunday. Our pastor preached , our song leader led music, there was prayer. And the coolest thing was seeing each other log in
and comment on FB live. Seeing who was watching, seeing the familiar names (and even a few guests!) created that sense of community.
Finally, the hardest thing as this drags on will be: what to do about communion and baptism? The two ordinances that we follow. I can see a way
to do communion online with each person participating from their home. Baptism? That requires being in person. I think we may just have to wait and have many baptisms at once after this is over. But we can look for a bright side there too: my fellow Baptists, imagine having a
service 6 months from now where all the people saved during ths time are baptized at once. Would that not be meaningful? Would that not show in a mighty way how the Lord was at work during this time?To complete my thoughts:churches, stay home.Use tech to gather. Do what’s right.
