HR is very reliant on rules, clarity, clear policy and - most of all - has a well established habit of getting employment lawyers to validate everything they do.
Before all this that was reasonable. Prudent even.
But we are now off the map.

And HR’s ability to be agile, work with grey, take the right risks and be the moral compass for the organisation has never been needed more.
It’s unreasonable to ask for the type of guidance and detail you’d have had previously. And it’s unreasonable to refuse to proceed until you have it.
It’s time to improvise. With compassion and courage.
Even the employment lawyers are all coming to different conclusions.

People’s emotions are heightened. We’re all in stress response.
There are no fail-safe ways to proceed.
Only the best ways based on the information you have - that includes legal, financial, operational but - most of all - human.

It’s really bloody hard. And it’s requiring many HR people to act out of type. Or to be braver.
That’s OK. It’s needed.
