Dated 6 April 1320, the Declaration is an appeal sent to Pope John XXII in Avignon. It sought to assert Scotland’s long history as an independent kingdom and to persuade the Pope to accept Robert Bruce as its legitimate king – Robert I.
Replies from the Pope reveal that the letter was one of three sent from Scotland at this time – one from the King, one from the bishop of St Andrews, and one from the barons of Scotland.
None of the copies sent to the Pope have survived. The Declaration cared for by National Records of Scotland is a duplicate of the barons’ letter that was kept in Scotland.
