The festival commemorates the rededication of the temple to ranganatha after elaborate renovations. The Hampi prince Virupaksha Raya spearheaded the renovation and the ther festival was instituted in his name as Viruppan Thirunaal. (2/n)
Since this was the first great festival to take place, when it did for the first time in 1380s, after six decades of desolation under madurai sultanate, villagers from across the neighborhood thronged. This tradition of villagers continues to this day (3/n)
