“Would it be in order to sing God Save the King?”

Will Crooks, trade unionist and one of the first Labour MPs, was born in Poplar, London #OnThisDay 1852. A strong patriot, Crooks led the House of Commons in singing the national anthem following the outbreak of WW1.
At a recruitment meeting in October 1914, Crooks said that he would “prefer to be a wage slave under King George than to have German liberty under the Kaiser.”
