To wear a mask or not to wear a #mask?
That is the question.
There’s been contradictory scientific advice.
And we know about #PPE shortages in health and social care.
Wearing a facemask can be sensory hell.
This thread’s on why I’m still doing it.

There are many different types of #FaceMasks including improvised homemade versions - we don’t need to deprive front line workers of #PPE.
Wearing a #facemask is about protecting other people as well as our self. Transmission of #Covid_19 can happen when we are symptom free.

We’ve been warned about not using face masks properly - donning and doffing is done in a particular way for good reason. These techniques can be learnt.
Using the same face mask for extended periods without changing or sanitising it is risky so we need to have a good supply.

During a long sleepless night I watched YouTube videos on how to make #facemasks. In my dreams I’ll work out how to use the sewing machine that has sat in the loft for the last year.
In reality I’ll be making ‘no sew’ face masks from folded fabric squares and some elastic.

Working in a shop has made me acutely aware of #Covid_19 transmission through droplets. I sometimes feel them on my face when people speak to me.
Customers popping in for 5 minutes may not feel like they need a mask but shop assistants are exposed to hundreds of people a day.

If people remain 2m away at all times the droplets should not reach me. But they don’t, and they do.
And while I’m politely asking a customer to step back to a safe distance my breath is reaching them.
We all need to behave like we’re infectious, so I choose to wear a mask.

Wearing a mask could lead to a false sense of security - social distancing and hand washing are still vital.
When I have to go into shops as a customer I time my visits carefully and get in and out as quickly as possible. I’m a ninja shopper Browsing is a thing of the past.

I get hot and bothered very easily wearing a mask and this can increase my stress levels. I hate reusing a mask (horrible stale smell) and the fabric can make a big difference. Experimenting with different options is the best way of finding something that is tolerable for you.

My lovely mother in law (retired nursing sister) always wears a scarf across her face if she has a cold or flu. I trust her judgement as much as some of the ‘science’. Wearing a mask, bandana or scarf can be a visible expression of concern for others.
I like that.

As I’m #autistic I’m not supposed to be that aware of how other people feel but here’s a strange thing, I am!
When I wore a respirator mask in the shop I saw the expression on little children’s faces. I’d become scary.
So I’m making lots of fruit and veg themed cloth masks.

I’ve been thinking about improvising some kind of filter. If you do the same please be careful. Some materials aren’t safe next to the skin or when breathed in.
If you have asthma or lung conditions it’s worth checking that your oxygen levels remain ok if you wear a mask.
