“With so many varieties of mango, to use only one type for mango and sticky rice isn’t only boring, but lazy too.” #bkkfatty
Can we start a thread of fav mango breeds? Weirder the name the better.
Today’s treat is mamuang ‘galon’ or you also hear them called mamuang ‘dood’ bc you can bite the top and suck the meat out. Sour, sweet and shockingly citrusy.
That may be a southern Thai thing. In issan/lao they remove the seed and stuff in sticky rice. If you ever see stuffed mango in restaurants, that’s the origin.
There’s gotta be hundreds of different breeds. Thai names like ‘kai thuk’ and ‘pram kai mia’ are basically ‘sell your house, sell your wife mangoes’ 🤣 (cc @j_vechbany)
::gulp:: Fisting mangoes? Lol. Don’t google that. They’re either named fist/kampun mangoes because they’re fist sized or worth fighting over. AOTA?
Green mangoes deserve some shine too. Rhino mangoes top the list, extra or ‘kod rad’ according to sweet/sassy fan club president @zwingzet 👍🏾
Kiew savoey is that middle ground btw sweet and savory. They’re the dark green ones that show up to the party a little ashy looking.
She’s been on your mind the whole time. She’s about that cash crop and shows up at every party. She cute, even if a little basic. Nam dok mai y’all.
This big head dude r2e2 is likely a Thai mango cross bred with aussie Bowen mangoes (thx for reminding me @hp88). Big boned but thin skinned 😩
Here’s a great chart from @yearofthedurian (aka durianwriter on IG) but there’s still lots more!
Is this the most well endowed of the greenies? Mahn or mun in ‘mun khun si’ refers to the starchiness. Haven’t had one recently but don’t think they’re that rare either.
My next procurement will be black gold or ‘tong dam’ here’s the link to a small organic farmer on Facebook who could use the support of folks who don’t mind weird mangoes https://www.facebook.com/duangkamol.pb
People still discovering this thread so gifting y’all a few more breeds. Here’s what I found roadside. Don’t think we mentioned yellow kamin or faalan. Some are like 2 for $1 😲
Late to the party but like to make an entrance, these are the ML/MR’s of mangoes. Gifted from twitter friend @j_vechbany, I think the breed is a Rama 9 thing. Anybody know the history? (cc @tri26)
‘Snake tongue’ (lin ngoo hao) mangoes 🐍
Tried these yet? #teammango #bkkfatty
Look how oddly narrow and skinny the seed is on this nga chang daeng #bkkfatty
Farmer gifted us ‘ok rong tawai’ (kinda rare) on the left and gui fei which is a Taiwanese breed (?).
Chok anun freckled and scarred. The long battle wounds are streaks from the mango sap that oozes after cutting. Eaten both when green or yellow, & not too fibrous.
