So I started a thing a couple months ago where I decided to watch all of the mainline Disney animated films in order. Now that we're all socially distancing it not only has given me a lot more time to do that, but I decided why not put a lil mini reviews up on here too?
It's shocking how much Snow White and the Seven Dwarves holds up almost 90 years later. Sometimes the dwarf scenes feel like a different movie, but it's beautifully animated and has truly terrifying villain. It's outlasted some more modern Disney films, and will continue to.
Pinocchio is one of the films I hardly remembered watching, which made it all the more exciting. Maybe not as nuanced as Snow White, but it looks even better. The story is straightforward, but effective, even if Pinocchio can be a little shit. Last third is genuinely terrifying.
It's kind of a miracle Fantasia exists, especially being from 1940. It's imperfect, but it makes up for it by sheer ambitious. What I wouldn't give to see it in a theater with a live orchestra. A film this abstract film would never get made today (they tried), and I love it.
The beauty in Dumbo lies in its simplicity. It's noted as one of the shortest Disney films (64 minutes!), but there's no lack of quality. There's genuine heart at the center of this, and the "Baby Mine" sequence always gets to me. Dumbo is probably my favorite Disney protagonist.
Bambi is probably the closest Disney has gotten to making a slice of life film. For all its mommy deaths & daddy issues, Bambi is really a coming of age story set in the forest. It's both heartbreaking and heartwarming, and the animation here is brilliant. One of my favs.
Okay, I have a confession. I skipped the package films. I'm sorry. Perhaps I'll return to them later but for now, we're moving ahead.
Cinderella is an absolutely great film! Those who give the character flak owe themselves a rewatch. She is very much an independent person and stands her ground many times! Lady Tremaine continues to be one of Disney's greatest villains. The dress scene still gives me chills.
Alice in Wonderland has come out of this whole experiments as one of my favorites! It's a little messy but I love just how weird it's willing to get. Plus it has shome of the most underrated songs in the Disney canon. One of the best cast of characters in a Disney film, I'd say.
Peter Pan was always one of my favorites as a kid, and it still is! But wooow is it problematic. I mean, there's the obvious racial stereotyping, but also somehow every character is unlikable here except for Wendy and Capt. Hook? Still managed to enjoy it, despite obvious flaws.
The racial stereotyping continues into Lady and the Tramp, this time even more blatant! Thankfully it's only a small part of the (relatively brisk!) film. I loved the turn of the century America setting, and the romance between Lady & Tramp is one of Disney's greatest.
Sleeping Beauty is simply one of the most stunning films Disney's ever done. From the animation, to the backgrounds, to the music, this is Disney firing on all cylinders. And don't even get me started on how Maleficent is one of cinema's greatest villains.
And with that, we're officially caught up! Which means this thread will be updated in real time! We're rapidly approaching the first dark age of Disney animation, and I for one am excited to see what happens!
