Simon Bridges is not flouting the rules! He’s entitled to travel to Parliament from home/family for the essential work he undertakes as Leader of the Oppositon. It seems a bit odd to go to and from Tauranga for work at this time, but it’s his right.
And he has a vitally important role especially at a time when the Govt is (understandably) making decisions that are (understandably) extraordinary in their impact on the people of NZ. I don’t care who Govt is, the opposition leader should be able to move freely to do their job!
As Māori I’m particularly strong about the Govt being closely monitored at times like this. I happen to trust the PM & many of her team, but NZ Govts over the years have done many things to harm Māori and even the best leaders need to be kept accountable by the established checks
So I think the attacks on Simon Bridges are unfair. People should be happy to see him being so active in his role at this time (while also balancing his family commitments) and as Dr Dean Knight says (I RT’d relevant tweets) there are important constitutional considerations too
