Many don’t realize that covid19 is dividing the health care system in a unique way. A short thread 👇
While ERs and ICUs in New York and other high infection cities are overwhelmed, much of the rest of the health care system is very lightly being used.
Elective procedures and normal doctor’s visits have been cancelled. Because people are staying home, there isn’t as much sickness being spread, traumas, etc. (good thing)
As a result, many hospitals have an extremely low census, and doctors offices are closed. Hospital shifts are being cut and practices are laying off staff, just like other industries.
We tend to think of medicine as recession proof since people always get sick, but covid19 has split the health care system where those treating covid19 are getting crushed and other providers (including other ERs in cities without a surge) have few patients.
Unlike other industries where “patronage” drops, hospitals need to stay open in case people get sick and need care. Difficult times economically for many hospitals and medical practices.
