I just received the sad news that my colleague, Margaret Burbidge, has passed away.

She turned 100 years old last August. Margaret played a foundational role in the physics and astronomy of the 20th Century.

Rest In Peace Margaret, among the stars you helped us understand.
On the occasion of her 100th birthday, @UCSanDiego put together this brief tribute to her unparalleled career.
#MargaretBurbidge was the epitome of brilliance, class, and graciousness. She was a visionary scientist, a devoted mentor, and a fearless leader.

She was the first “B” in the epochal “BBFH” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Burbidge and the only observer among the quartet.

Margaret was the first female astronomer to become a member of the @theNASEM.
Among the many astronomers she mentored was #VeraRubin who spent a sabbatical here @UCSanDiego in 1963.

Her protégé #VeraRubin became the second female astronomer to join @theNASEM.
