. @MichelleRempel please update your understanding on this. There is no contradiction or "flip-flop" here. Dr. Tam's ( @CPHO_Canada) original statement that there is no benefit to healthy (uninfected) people wearing masks still holds true. https://twitter.com/MichelleRempel/status/1246824568230162432
The benefit comes when asymptomatic people who are unknowingly carrying the virus wear a mask. In that case, masks may protect others from the mask-wearer. Where the science is evolving was understanding the extent to which asymptomatic people can transmit the virus.
In medicine and in public health, every intervention (masks, border closures) has risks and benefits. Mask wearing has risks of self-contamination when putting on/removing, false reassurance leading to relaxation of other social distancing interventions.
Additionally, some studies show that cloth masks, when worn for long periods, can become damp and actually trap MORE viral particles, exposing the wearer to risk. These are just some examples of many variables Dr. Tam needed to assess and update with the latest information.
I hope you have the maturity and courtesy to update your understanding of this and to recognize the qualifications of Dr. Tam ( @CPHO_Canada), who has devoted an entire career to studying this field.
