OK! Finally got an answer from someone w/ healthcare supply chain experience

Summary: hospital supply chain teams are domestic not intl → work with distributors eg McKesson → distributors are & will solve this better at scale → startups can help with minor help meantime

OK here's the fuller explanation:

First, hospital supply chain teams are typically domestic, not international (unlike Tesla or GM). They have little experience w/ overseas procurement needed here

That’s OK. Those teams work with healthcare distributors eg McKesson, Cardinal...
Second, those distributors have done this for decades!

They have established relationships with Asian manufacturers

They *are* working on this problem

They'll likely be more impactful at solving PPE shortage at scale, bc of their exp

Doesn’t mean newcomers shouldn’t help...
Third, back to the main question: can newcomers help/do this better?

In my main source's opinion: startups & nonprofits can help short-term by scavenging for PPE from other industries/overseas ➡️ transfer to providers

May not be huge scale. But any help, helps.
OK that's all!

For the curious, sources:

- 3 healthcare workers. Of them, 1 admitted didn't know, 1 had some good guesses, 1 was the main source for this thread

- 8 non-HCW. 6 had guesses, 2 had similar exp in diff industry
