Here is a thread of cool underrated horse breeds that I love because the question "what breed is superior" is answered very easily: all of them are.
PREs/ Andalusians are up first! The Iberian horse folks split their books into Pura Raza Española for Spanish horses, and Lusitanos for Portuguese horses, and I think they're both equally great. Smart, even tempered, beautiful, kind, and athletic, these horses are lovely.
Another rare one: criollos! I have only ever worked extensively with one criollo and she is the best. Pepper is from Uruguay and is a superior horse. She's smart, brave, forgiving, and a crackerjack polo pony, plus best feet I've ever seen on a working horse. She's the best!
one to try! Smoothest lope you'll ever ride. Peps and I are always happy to meet any friendly mutuals who find their way over to this neck of the woods.
Should have added Lipizzaners in with the rest of the Iberian horses but anyway here they are. 10/10 best hair to play with. Pure Lips don't show up super often in NA, and these guys ended up at my old barn because, allegedly, an old US ambassador to Austria had been given
a breeding pair by some friends he'd made abroad, as he was a great admirer of the breed. These two were the products of that pair. Lips share temperaments with the rest of the Iberian horses but they're a lot more... linebred... which can make them quirky.
Spice is an honorable mention, he is not purebred so doesn't technically belong on this list but he is a curly x paint who somehow ended up with spots. Curly horses look cool af and if you know anything about them feel free to add to this. He is a hardy guy, that's for sure!
For a young horse who is lightly backed he has caused a lot of controversy so far because nobody believes me when I say he doesn't have an appaloosa parent 😂 Our friend knows genetics quite well and explained to us how he ended up with the spots instead of pinto splotches.
This one is a real treat: meet Dave. He is a Rocky Mountain Horse! Rockies are bred to have an ambling gait that is very easy on the rider, as their original purpose was as an all-rounder work horse for farm folks from the region.
I plan on owning an Iberian horse one day, and if you haven't sat on one yet you definitely should if the opportunity arises! Here are two of my fav Lusitanos. The temperament and quality of movement on a well-bred one of these guys is insane.
That's it for me, but feel free to add your cool/ unusual/ underrated breeds to this thread! Bonus points if you have/ ride a Canadian horse, Florida Cracker, Sumba pony, Paso Fino, Knapstrupper, or Mongolian pony.
