Because everything about our world is structured in the language of violence and conquest. Pandemics are wars. Just as there's a war on poverty, drugs, crime, Christianity, our way of life. Love is war. Life is about struggle and then victory. You fight yourself to be better. https://twitter.com/BreeNewsome/status/1246898019720728577
But in this instance, the language does make it more acceptable for people to accept the deaths of workers and citizens as unavoidable consequences of the fight for a better life, as heroic sacrifice, rather than the results of an evil and incompetent administration
People were on here condemning nurses for not being willing to die in the line of work, because everything has made it seem like health workers are now soldiers whose lives are being bartered for victory, and ignoring that they're being killed by stupid politicians.
You could also see it by how people challenging the shutdown argue it as giving in to the virus and fear, as if the virus is a terrorist organization that you have to be principled against. It's extreme egotism but there's also no other conception of the world beyond "fight".
