I’m always thinking about this Lewis Hyde quote: “Irony has only emergency use. Carried over time it is the voice of the trapped who have come to enjoy their cage.”

Especially on Twitter, where irony is basically currency, and the draw of the platform is addictive distraction.
There’s a lot worth distracting each other from now. Every moment is an emergency, or feels like it on here, and the irony is welcome in that way. I worry, though, that it becomes harder to offer anything sincere without some minor caveat of #EarnestTweet.
The people I most enjoy following here are those who post things that seem in some way genuine, whether they’re related to the mood of the moment or not. I don’t post very much other than the occasional reply because I tend to overthink things.
*Never Tweet* is an attractive strategy, but at the same time, so is *Tweet Everything*. The platform doesn’t reward any sort of middle ground.
