Why are we pretending hxh didnt challenge and reverse the typical shounen formula and provide us with characters that actually face the blunt force of their actions. The power system is unlike any other. It’s slow pacing is to world build and establish character. https://twitter.com/sonii/status/1246250500531478528
I’d say the story-telling of hxh was really high quality and phenomenal. We have characters that defy “typical roles” despite seeming to fit that role at face value. Gon was left by his father and wants power—every shounen protag ever. And yet he completely turns this around
People who say gon’s transformation was a cheap skate absolutely missed the foreshadowing present within YorkNew Arc (Krpk’s conditions and chains), and Bisky’s True Form. All that was to build to Gon-San. And Gon was ALWAYS a shaky character built on gray morals
It’s like y’all want to skip over the details and refuse to take five minutes to analyze. HXH is NOT an anime you can take at face value. You actually have to digest information and look into it, lol.
People who dislike alluka because she was “a power card” but forget she was ALWAYS there. No one counted that there was four of the five zoldyck siblings introduced? It’s not like she was a secret 6th sibling. She was always there, just forgotten by killua due to the needle
And!! The antagonists aren’t always the “villain”, and they have a reason for what they do—they’re not bad just for the sake of being bad, and indeed have skewed morals. It’s refreshing to see these “bad” characters actually help the “good” characters!!
And we often bully ging for being a shit father, but it’s important to acknowledge there IS regret within him for leaving gon and it’s that very regret that pushes him into NOT wanting to see his son. He doesn’t feel adequate, which is funny because neither does gon.
WHILE WE’RE AT IT: realize that HXH challenges a lot of beliefs, and a lot of ideas are brought up—humans are the true monsters, issues of co-dependency and abuse, unhealthy relationships, hyperfixations and abandonment issues, support/inclusion of trans and black characters
Father figure vs Mentor—this applies to both killua and gon, with Gotoh and Kite respectively. HXH is just so good and to put it down because you can’t stand the “slow pacing” drives me WILD. The intricacies of Nen? Outstanding. High risk and high return.
