So NYC just banned Zoom for K-12. Zoom is a powerful tool for connection. It's also riddled with security flaws, privacy invasions & extractive design choices. Maybe be less mad at the folks who made this tough call, more mad at those complicit in creating harmful code.
I know a lot of people feel like they can't live without Zoom right now. That's not an accident. Lots of large-scale tech tools are designed and marketed to feel so essential to your well-being that you'll give up just about anything to use them. We can resist
You can stay on Zoom & manage your risk (i'm doing that), but the Zooms & Grubhubs & etc of the world won't stop mining us until enough of us take our money and data away from them that choosing more ethical practices start to make cold hard financial sense.
For Blind people especially, decisions about Zoom are wrenching. The platform is beautifully accessible, and most others aren't. But staying with the platform because there's no choice just replaces inaccessibility with new harms. It's a real bind.
