The conversation about colorism is always funny. On one hand, we live in a white supremacist society and white privilege exists. But when it’s time to recognise how someone’s proximity to whiteness (being biracial or lightskinned) benefits them, then people start being dishonest.
Colorism is racism’s sibling. It is the byproduct of white supremacist ideals. Either racism is real or it’s not. Either white people have privilege or they don’t. If you believe that racism is alive, you cannot dismiss colorism.
So which one is it? Pick a side.
+ texturism and featurism are colorism’s cousins.
You cannot pick and choose which oppression you wish to acknowledge. You can be disadvantaged and privileged at the same time. You can simultaneously experience racism while benefiting from other -isms. It’s OK to tell the truth.
