ppl romantize bkak a lot, and that's not bad! but it makes fans that just joined the fandom get fond of superficial stuff when the real deal is even more 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜, so in honor of bkak day here's a thread of bkak's relationship without focusing on a romantic aspect!
my only purpose here is show y'all what many of u already know, but in more depth so fans that doesn't focus that much in bokuaka as two individuals and how that contrast just perfect with each other can know more about them and understand why we all love them so much
to start it all, let's first focus on bokuto koutarou as a character, at first he's intimidating but then we find out that he's a ball of sunshine, passionate, competitive, intense, powerful, at first sight simple minded and dumb, and someone too energetic and funny
bokuto can bring the competitive side from every team he plays against, he can literally make everyone on the court give their all no matter if they're foes or allies, and thats hinted since the start, but as we see fukurodani play in nationals we can see it more clearly
we can also start to appreciate bokuto as someone really smart, this was just a detail but when bokuto commented out loud that he's aware of what factors can bring him down, even akaashi got surprised, but that wasn't all, bokuto kept on being smart, in lots of ways
bokuto is a complex character, even though that at the start he only seemed like a simple minded boy with no more depth, since a young age he was interested in vball cause it was fun, and he also realized that if you really wanted to have fun, u needed to work hard for it
he wasn't understood in this way when he was young, but in fukurodani he found the right people to impulse his love for vball, to develop even more his passion and dedication, and in his third year, he already had his mind set to go forward in that path, he knew what he wanted
he's way too impredecible for his own good, but the fact that he knew what he wanted and that his vball career wasn't over just because he was graduating that year was fucking mature of him and i loved that personal side of him that furudate showed us
if there was anyone left who thought that bokuto was only a dumbass who couldn't think for himself, that helped them to get better !! and even made akaashi understand a little more about bokuto's person, cause in the whole series is him who's more interested in bokuto after all
now let's talk about akaashi keiji!
at the start furudate only presented him as a guy with a perfect resting bitch face and a serious and smart personality, and given that he was a minor side character, he only appeared when bokuto did
and here is where furudate played with us, akaashi seems serious but that doen't mean he isn't passionate as bokuto or any other character is about vball, and it's interesting how he indirectly says that he's the only one that keeps up with bokuto and his extra training
how neat and good akaashi is at the very start is pretty good to me, but this image was way too perfect, and even VS nekoma and early in nationals, akaashi seemed too perfect in vball related things, that is, until he started to overthink after their match against morikawa
saru already knew that akaashi was overthinking which means that it wasn't the first time, and in my opinion from this point on its when his personality started to be more out for us in a personal level bc before he didn't have that much protagonism involving him as an individual
we see more of akaashi, and even we see him fall. no one can be perfect all the time, and even a great setter like him, who we never saw having many errors on the court, can have his weak moments, we weren't used to it, and that made his backstory even more refreshing in a way
𝗮𝗸𝗮𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶'𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲, that's the purpose of his character but even him can be overwhelmed by his environment, and the pressure that usuri put on him was really bad for his poor overthinking mind
he was showed as a goody two-shoes when he was a middle schooler, he liked vball but he kind of lacked in the passionate aspect for it, at least, until he saw bokuto as a first year playing for fukurodani and the light on his eyes showed that something 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥
and here is when we start to talk about bokuaka and about what makes their relationship so good and very well developed in a prolonged amount of time and chapters, they're not main characters, but furudate found a way to take their time with them and give us amazing content ♡
at the very start of hq, akaashi is showed as someone close with bokuto given that he was always with him and he even scolded bokuto, a third year older than him, and bokuto let him, their relationship was funny and interesting, bokuto even wanted akaashi to praise him
akaashi was also good at "reading" bokuto's emo mode, people kind of expected him to take care of bokuto when he was like this, akaashi in this aspect influenced bokuto in a positive way, and bokuto was always grateful with his vice captain for it, they've a good friendship
what i also really enjoy about bokuaka is how good they understand each other when it cames to volleyball, their comments when they go together to watch their friends matches always kind of match and they think alike a lot, they have good chemistry between them and that's nice
special mentions to:
you could say they're good friend despite their age difference, and also the fact their personalities are so different they're opposite poles that attract each other, or at least that's what we are given by furudate until their backstory which was brilliant (i love u furudate)
bokuto is more complex than what most of us used to think, and I'm forever grateful with furudate that it was also the case with akaashi! both of them are much more than what we see in a superficial way, they are their own person separately from each other and thats important
they think for themselves, and how that's incorporated so they can meet each other and be interesed mutually for the other is pretty simple but good, akaashi was the first one in being interested in bokuto, and how he hid it when bokuto got interested in him is forever iconic
bokuto kind of felt comfort in training with akaashi and he even said to akaashi how good he was, sincerely from the bottom of his heart, and akaashi as a first year and as someone who admired bokuto, felt nice and good, and in my opinion, this also made him feel kind of powerful
bokuto also used to look for akaashi when he was down and wanted to stop that feeling, akaashi was always his partener to train, akaashi understood him in this sense and that maybe meant a lot for bokuto who was someone left behind for people who said he was too serious abt vball
this is totally my personal opinion so don't take it to heart, but to me, that power feeling of being so good for bokuto, was akaashi's biggest flaw and weakness (aside from his jealousy and inferiority complex). he thought that he understood bokuto to the core
he understood bokuto? of course he did, but not in the levels he always felt confident about, he thought that he was someone who could control bokuto, and with that any game, and when superficially it seemed as the case, in reality bokuto always could do good without him
and when akaashi was falling, there was bokuto to lend him his hand, if people used to think bokuto was a simple minded boy, he showed everybody he wasn't, he's not dumb, he can understand people in emotionally ways, and he understood that akaashi was losing his head
he also knew that it started with the mujinazaka's setter and he even targeted him for what he did to akaashi, when he did that to defend akaashi it was so fucking adorable and cute, he cares for his friend and is always there to defend his honor
bokuto, who was always showed as someone who akaashi only understood, showed us that he is also someone who can understand akaashi, even more deeper than what akaashi understands himself, bokuto trust him and knows akaashi will be back in no time
when akaashi is back on himself, bokuto and akaashi's team work seems to have leveled up, and bokuto even asks for something too personal of akaashi, something he knows it's not necessary, but he wants it cause it is from akaashi and no one else. and akaashi delivers.
they enjoy each other's company, they enjoy each other on the court and they even enjoy having conversations in which they talk about how the other feels in personal ways and they both help to cheer each other up, their bond is too strong and how it is showed is pretty brilliant
they've great chemistry and their friendship is good and attractive, how their personalities developed in more mature ways and how that worked just perfect for their relationship is hilarious in how fucking perfect it was, they aren't the mains, but they sure felt like they were
in conclusion and to close this, bokuto is the only one who can make akaashi laugh sincerely, akaashi is the only one who can make bokuto felt such trust from someone, they both admire each other in high levels, and how their characters fit each other so perfect is beautiful
bokuto and akaashi are much more than what we sometimes talk about them on daily basis, they're perfect as individuals, and they're also perfect when they're involved together, they're good friends and their bond through the years is wonderful ♡
thank you furudate for making them so much justice! even though they're not your main protagonists I sure as hell felt like they were my protagonists while reading their backstory, such incredible writting until the end
happy bokuaka day y'all 🖤💛 this is way too long and I tried my best to summarize everything, there were things not that much relevant that I left out totally on purpose, but I think I pretty much made my point clear, so thank you for taking ur time reading this! love u babes
