San Diegans: all of us are in an excellent position to support our local food supply (farmers, distribution) and to go hard on small scale urban agriculture. Imho, San Diego is one of the best positioned cities for this... anywhere
San Diego’s geography of canyons & mesas mean that we are a “city of villages,” as our transit plan once said. We are an urban/rural interface region and boy am I happy to live here. I love this city so much and it took me a while realize one reason why
it’s because of the urban/rural interface. There are farms, not just small scale, within a 5 minute drive of my house, and there is a wonderfully robust community of food sharing here that’s existed for a very long time
Get plugged into it. You can start by signing up for a CSA from one of our local farms (Yasukochi Family Farms, Be Wise Ranch come to mind). So many farms. Give them money, you’ll get produce and they get to keep harvesting. Win/win
There is a giant food sharing network called the Backyard Exchange. it’s mostly active on fb. every neighborhood has one. Get into it. You’d be shocked at how many people are begging to share citrus, stone fruit, even expensive stuff like passionfruit
I imagine there’s a seed exchange through the backyard exchange. People often share starts. It’s time!! If you’ve been thinking even a little about having a garden or getting chickens or whatever just fucking do it
Fucking do it; but ensure that you connect to your local community. You don’t have to do this alone!!! You don’t have to plant enough crops in your garden to feed your family... together we can ramp up food production
There are so many climate ranges in San Diego, like it’s gonna snow in Julian next week. Meeting & trading w people in different climate zones means lots of variety
Also I’m trading seeds and sharing them so seriously hit me up w garden questions anytime
