For the record, Cathy Young's piece at the Bulwark does not give a very accurate summary of Vox's coverage of this. She seems to be trying to downplay this as if it were about one tweet:
But here's what Vox published on Jan 30, the day WHO declared a global emergency:
More from Cathy Young:
Vox's Kelsey Piper did publish a nuanced piece about concern over the virus on Feb. 6, but one of the scenarios in the "8 scenarios" piece was "Travel bans isolate countries, spread xenophobia — and exacerbate outbreaks." https://www.vox.com/2020/2/5/21122758/coronavirus-outcomes-pandemic-travel-china-map
The next day, Feb 26th, Vox published a piece titled "If the coronavirus hits America, who’s responsible for protecting you?" Answer, the states:
The same piece goes on to say that counties and states could issue lock downs but called that an "extreme scenario."
My point about this is not that Vox did a terrible job covering it. In retrospect, they look cautious but only because some want to apply an absurd standard to Trump, i.e. Joe Scarborough's "everyone saw this coming in early January."
In reality, no one at Vox was calling for states to be shut down in Feb. That seemed extreme and hard to imagine to everyone at the time, left and right. In fact, the very first county to shut down was on March 16th, the first state (California) on the 19th. That was 17 days ago.
