Did we all just forget the “The @NazarethCollege Blackface Scandel”? Because I didn’t.

.-.-. An (angry) Thread .-.-.
On March 30th, 2020, @BCad3t (an angel) posted a video of a @NazarethCollege student named Stanley Austin portrayed in blackface on Snapchat. Below is the initial screen recording that was circulating around Twitter.
Side note: there is no audio, however this screenshot arose as this mess ensued.
@BCad3t tagged @NazarethCollege with this post. To answer her; no. Most of us who are students are outraged by this entire situation, and I’ll answer you since the school didn’t properly address your question.
After this was posted, @NazarethCollege addressed the initial post and sent a DM to @BCad3t and sent the message the college posted on March 30th at 2:06 covering the issue. Keep in mind, this was just only addressed on Twitter.
So my question to @NazarethCollege ... Why was this message not posted on Facebook? Most parents of students are on Facebook, and not everyone is on Twitter. It should have been posted on all platforms. It looked extremely shady.
This isn’t the first time @NazarethCollege has had a discriminatory action take place. Back in September of 2018, we had an incident where a swastika was carved on someone’s door. When this happened, it was addressed and there was a forum on anti-semitism that same week.
This blackface scandel arose, we received an email and that was it, no follow up, no indication that the student(s) are being punished, we were just sent another message from the President.
While I understand the right to a trial and having to follow protocol, I still was not satisfied with how the school handled things to this point... and I wasnt the only one...
But wait... it only gets better! Shanley (The girl in the video) has been a repeated offender on social media, making her self VERY vocal and even more of a racist. Awesome. (Can’t see it now though, she deleted her social media)
BUT WAIT ... IT GETS BETTER! She not only use a racial slur, she used a gay slur as well. Wow, no one is safe. This especially hit hard for me being apart of the LGBTQIA+ community. (She also used an ableist slur ON TOP OF THAT)
While I understand these tweets are from 2013, she still posted it. She has a known history of being homophobic and racist. Which leads me into my next topic.
Why. Wasn’t. She. Looked. Into.
If you’re going to be applying to colleges (as a student athlete) why wasnt a background check or basic overview of her social media conducted? One look at her history, I wouldn’t accept her into my school.
Also she’s a student athlete, isn’t there supposed to be a background check into our athletes? 🤔🤔 We’ve always been taught that everything we post on social media and the internet will be there forever. So my question to @NazarethCollege ...do you care what your students post?
With her being a student athlete and the clear lack off background checks, why didn’t the coach say anything? Where is the coach’s response to this. Clearly two of your athletes have done something offensive, why didn’t the coach address it, or @NazAthletics for that matter?
These two athletes (Shanley Austin being the one in blackface, and Mikaila Rubin being the one taking the video) sullied the name of @NazAthletics , the Women’s Hockey team, and the entire school, but the coach and the athletics department stayed silent.
I understand that faculty, coaches, and others at @NazarethCollege are probably besides themselves right now, especially Braveman, but when an entire community is outraged, staying silent isn’t the move.
Staying silent doesn’t shield you from the news articles posted.
Staying silent doesn’t do anything for the soon-to-be graduated seniors who (in most cases) have given this school four years of dedication, hard work, and money, just to have our school be remembered as this recent blackface scandal.
Personally I don’t want to be affiliated with Naz as of late, this sucks for someone who is looking to start a career right now and having to provide @NazarethCollege ‘s name to potential employers. This goes for anyone who is an alum and looking for a job as well.
Also, why hasn’t @NazarethCollege addressed this with the students and faculty who are part of the groups discriminated against, especially the African American community. I can’t imagine what must be going on in their minds and how @NazarethCollege stayed silent on their behalf.
Out of all of this, Shanley did respond.
She failed to address many issues outside of the initial action, so take that as you will. The screenshot I was sent is too blurred to read so attached is the exact message from my notes.
After all of this information, @NazarethCollege still never really addressed how they were going to handle this situation. Shanley’s response was the only indication of her not returning to school, however she’s not expelled. Which is wrong. Mikaila Rubin has yet to respond.
The fact that she pulled herself out is going to last in every student, alumni, and this communities minds.

As a senior who is going to be graduating @NazarethCollege , I’m extremely disappointed in them.
For some reason this didn’t get posted but this is the usage of a gay and ableist slur from Shanley.
