THREAD (1/7): I'm a #COVID19 screener at the main entrance of a major hospital with a strict visitor restriction policy. Only patients allowed in. I've learned a lot about the patients I see every day, but perhaps more about their caregivers.
(2/7): Half of my days are spent asking patients about the presence of any #COVID19 symptoms: cough, fever, shortness of breath. For the other half, I work to convince caregivers that they cannot pass my checkpoint. Their loved ones must brave the hospital alone.
(3/7): For years, these patients have relied on their caregivers for language and mobility support (many of them are elderly immigrants). We have porters and translators to help with these needs, but the accommodations are insufficient to most.
(4/7): This is because the caregivers of hospital-bound patients provide more than logistic support. They're the people who coordinate (and execute) patient care plans; who keep track of medications, who advocate for patient needs; and who provide much-needed emotional support.
(5/7): Our visitor restriction policy – like those across Canada – is essential to protect patients, staff and the public from #COVID19 spread. Loosening these restrictions would be a mistake.
(6/7): But one thing it's proven to me is that while our healthcare system is strong, it can really only function thanks to the "hidden" work of patients' caregivers. They are true #HealthcareHeroes, today and every day.
(7/7): No hard-hitting conclusion here. Just thought that, while we continue to love and support or #FrontLineHeroes who are giving their all every day, we take a minute to recognize the other #UnsungHeroes who are constantly fighting the battle, too – CAREGIVERS.
