Canada can't afford to abandon its partnership with the US, but it just as clearly can't rely on it alone, either. The need to build other relationships, and develop contingency plans is clearer than ever—even on fronts we weren't thinking about before (like health supplies).
What's truly astonishing, though, is that the same conversations are going to be happening in US state capitals. New York can't rely on the federal government for relief right now.
I expect states that have the wherewithal to do so are going to look at ways they can reduce their reliance on federal assistance. At least, those with Democratic leadership will.
