I thought about going back to read all of the snide, shitty hot takes about this post-election SNL sketch, but it’s a beautiful day so I’m just gonna leave this here & ask why so many people were resistant to what was so plainly evident to others.
I would assume it would go without saying that SNL has always been hypocritical and self contradictory, but judging from my mentions maybe not?
This is why I said—in an earlier tweet today deleted because people were reframing it opportunistically—that this was a rare instance of the show saying something true and important, at a time when many people were painting anyone fearful of a Trump presidency as “hysterical.“
It struck me like an “oh my God, what horrible destructive madness if we been party to?“ moment. I don’t know what the behind the scenes story was – I would imagine there was some resistance to doing it based on their obsequious indulgence of Trump in the past.
It’s like one of my old English professors summarizing the plot of Oedipus Rex as “who is responsible for this plague on Thebes? Oh, wait a second — it’s me.“
