So, you're desperate to be able to help. You've filled out your NHS volunteer form, put your name down for Red Cross & donated to your local food bank. Now what? Here's a few ideas I have from charity angle which hopefully are helpful to anyone feeling at a loss. (thread)
1) Think of the future. It's a natural desire to think of the immediate needs, but think long term about who and what you can help and go from there. This will end, and you can help organisations to be on the front foot for when it does.
2) Charities are losing millions & YOU have the power to change this. Did you see the back garden marathon? Those guys who climb everest on their stairs? Raise funds for charities who will be helping communities impacted by Covid long after the headlines stop (and they will do)
3) Lend your expertise to a charity. The big ones will be inundated with requests, but smaller ones would love some pro-bono help if you have a special skill. Give them a bell.
4) Lend your skills to a community group. They very often have no money & exist on a shoe string. They would love your wizzy website, social media, copywriting skills so they can help bring communities back together when this is over.
5) Learn something new which you can use to help others when this is over. I heard Harry Styles is learning sign language in isolation... swooon!
6) Join your local political party, for which ever flavour you favour. They're still meeting (online!) and have tonnes of tasks for which they need volunteers for.
That's all I can think of for now. I didn't mean for this to be patronising and I'm sure many have been thought of by lots of people already, but speaking to a friend today I realised that some may be less obvious to people not working in charity sector than others ❤️☺️
