Anime texts in conversation with literary texts, a pedagogical proposition in thread form: 1/
The Color Purple and Revolutionary Girl Utena: These two texts both center the journey of queer woman survivors of abuse towards community with each other and collective liberation. 2/
The Hate U Give and Michiko and Hatchiin: These two works center on the interactions between Black people and the US and Brazilian police states, with young Black women struggling with their own hypervisibility as they resist antiblack carceral logics.
Poetry of Ocean Vuong and Sarazanmai: Both of these texts are concerned with how men cope with trauma through gendered performances--and how these coping mechanisms enclose us in cycles of destruction. How do we escape these? 3/
This is not just a gimmick to help kids "connect with" texts--rather, by placing texts in conversation with one another and with our own lives we can better understand the overarching mechanisms of oppression and liberation that run through our societies. 4/
