I hate Microsoft Teams *and* I understand the very real security concerns with Zoom *and* I think all of this is a ridiculous convo when I’m getting daily emails from my kids about their illness, family illness, mental health at home, job loss, etc.
I don’t pretend to know the full extent of what a people-centered response to large scale crisis should look like in education, but... this absolutely isn’t it. And it doesn’t have to be this way.
Planning for my week by scaling back, providing clearer guidance, putting predictable structures in place, finding ways to respond to needs kids have shared. If the school system won’t do it, we can. We don’t need permission to lead; we don’t have to ask to look out for our s’s.
Start with empathy and kids’ best interests in mind. Listen to your s’s, parents, colleagues, community. Own your human needs and recognize the importance of theirs. Be transparent and fair. Check district boxes as needed.
