I find it ironic that laws were placed to stop price gouging of items such as sanitizer & disinfectant bc it is (obviously) wrong to prey on people when they’re most vulnerable. Yet somehow insulin companies (legally) charge insulin 1000% higher than the cost of production.
The production cost of a vial of human insulin is estimated at $2.28 & $3.42, in the United States, the average price of purchase is around the $300 range for all insulins from the three major brands that control the market. That’s an increase of over 1,000%.
Not to mention that the United States is found to have one of thee HIGHEST monthly insulin costs. Costing people an average of $360 a MONTH. Meanwhile in Italy, it would cost roughly $17 USD a month.
You will not die without hand sanitizer. You WILL die without insulin if you are diabetic however. In fact, 10 people have died in the US in the last two years in attempt to ration their insulin.
Not to mention that diabetes & obesity is most prominent amongst black communities & poor communities. Structural violence comes to play with food deserts & lack of healthy food options. It’s a chain reaction.
Can we talk about this shit for a min ya’ll?! We got time lmao.
