I’m as annoyed as anyone at those continuing to flout the rules on social distancing.

But it’s also important to remember that the deaths we are seeing today are of people who got ill when the government was inexplicably refusing to listen to the warnings from Italy and Spain.
This piece from The Atlantic was published on March 11, it explained that doctors in Italy were being overwhelmed and having to choose which patients would live or die, the UK didn’t go into its current lockdown state until March 23
Italian doctors were desperately warning other countries to stop mass gatherings and lock down immediately, but the UK government allowed event like Cheltenham Festival and Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid (with 3,000 fans travelling from Covid-hit Spanish capital) to go ahead.
It is vital that we all continue the social distancing rules to stop more suffering - but let’s not forget that the government had explicit warnings of what could happen if it delayed the lock down - and failed to heed them.
