THREAD on Church Leadership & Coronapocalypse: 1. As far as I can tell the “flatten the curve” strategy will require social distancing at near-current levels until there is a vaccine.
2. Attempted “returns to normal” will likely result in renewed outbreaks.
3. Until a majority of people have either had it or been vaccinated, the virus will spread quickly and dangerously. So we are talking 12-18 months of what we are doing now if we continue with this strategy.
4. Churches & Pastors need to get their minds and finances ordered around this long term situation.
5. That means thinking differently about all kinds of things - congregational polity, ministry funding, membership, ordinances, staffing, worship gatherings, and more.
6. Being paralyzed, being broke, being fearful, or naively hopeful are not strategies. Digging in on highly nuanced ecclesiological preferences is questionable leadership imo. Pastors & churches have to seek the Lord & figure it out so as to not violate Scripture or conscience.
7. The Church has survived & thrived through plagues, persecution, famines, wars, schisms, scandals, & depressions. She will adapt and Jesus will continue to make her beautiful. Churches may look different on the other side. But The Church is invincible.
