I think this is largely a case of people rejecting the advice and constantly, hourly, questioning it. It’s proving to be a distraction.

The public wearing of masks, alone, with no other measures is unproven as a preventative measure. It’s mostly conjecture, educated (And uneducated) guesses.
I can really empathize with the health experts. Having to troubleshoot a problem in the middle of a crisis is something I have experience with.
Fortunately, I can train management to fuck off, stop interferring and leave me alone until I solve the problem.

Health officials do not have that luxury. Every statement they make is parsed, analyzed and doubted. We delay the solution when we constantly question everything.
