Reading about this presidency is going to be so fucking surreal for future generations. "So, he just kept saying awful shit & committing crimes & people wanted it to stop but it didn't stop & eventually people were wearing masks & dying by the thousands & it STILL didn't stop?"
Explaining the impotency of this moment will be so fucking hard.
"Like, you just let him do all this and say all that? Why didn't anyone stop him or arrest him or something?"
Because, like a virus, he hijacked our system & used our usual defense machanisms to reproduce himself.

"He lied and insulted your intelligence and said offensive shit on the daily, to the point where it was keeping people trapped inside and fearing for their lives! Why didn't you all see that?"
Well, we did. But it got so that pointing it out was treated like biased complaining.

"Did you get anything out of it? What was the trade off?"
If you were rich? Some extra $ maybe. But mostly it was just so that people who were intimidated by a smart black man got to feel like THEY were in control again. And they drove us off of a cliff no matter how we screamed

"Even though almost everything he said was demonstrably false and incoherent and dangerous?"
Yup.
Like, that's it. That's what this moment comes down to. "All this horrible stuff happened that was obvious and preventable?"
Yup. And don't forget unpopular, too.

In a way, this period of the Trump Era being defined by a nightmare virus is perfect. Because, after a certain point, you can't rationalize with a sickness. You can't argue with it.
You just have to do everything you can to ride it out.
You just have to do everything you can to ride it out.
I feel like this is the biggest lesson for me. As a humanist, as a rationalist, as a Jew, shit, even as a horror writer, I'm always looking for reasons why things happen.
But you can know why the tide rolls in; it doesn't stop the waves from crashing down on you.

I mean this motherfucker has been impeached, had numerous HIGH LEVEL conspirators thrown in jail for crimes HE'S IMPLICATED IN, the economy is imploding, he destroyed Puerto Rico, AND let--I mean, CONTINUES TO LET--a virus decimate the country.
AND HE STILL MIGHT GET REELECTED.
AND HE STILL MIGHT GET REELECTED.
I mean, this is why the Democratic Primary is so high-emotion, isn't it? It's like hand washing and disinfecting everything.
It's incredibly important, and you can drive yourself crazy obsessing over it ... but there's still no guarantee you're gonna avoid getting sick.
